CONSUMER HELP AND INFORMATION

Prescription Drug Discount Programs

Drug Discounts
Some drug manufacturing companies have developed prescription discount programs for seniors. To be eligible for these programs Medicare beneficiaries usually must have a limited household income and no other prescription drug coverage.

Membership Programs
Membership programs offer discounts on prescriptions, vision care, hearing aids, and other healthcare needs for an annual fee.

Mail Order Pharmacies
Some companies offer savings on prescriptions obtained by mail and ordered by telephone or over the Internet.

North Carolina Senior Care Program
P.O. Box 10068
Raleigh, NC 27605-5068
1-866-266-1388 toll free
www.ncseniorcare.com
To help seniors cope with the rising cost of prescription drugs, the State of North Carolina has introduced the Senior Care prescription drug card program. Senior Care pays for 60% of the first $1000 (up to $600 per year) of prescription costs for the treatment of heart disease, diabetes, and chronic lung disease. Members pay the remaining 40% of their covered drug costs, plus a service fee of $6 per prescription. Any costs beyond the $600 covered by this program (or drug costs for the treatment of other illnesses) are the member's responsibility. You can use your Senior Care card to obtain prescription drugs and insulin covered by Senior Care at over 1,500 pharmacies across North Carolina.

Pharmaceutical Company Programs (PhRMA)
1-800-762-4636
Through the PhRMA program, some pharmaceutical manufacturing companies provide limited prescription drugs to physicians for distribution to needy patients. Each company determines the eligibility criteria for its program and applications must be signed by your physician. A list of participating companies is available at www.phrma.org. and information about drugs covered is found at www.rxassist.org or www.needymeds.com.

TRICARE
1-877-363-6337
www.tricare.osd.mil
Military retirees who have served at least 20 years are eligible for low cost prescriptions (as are their dependants). Retirees must be registered with the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). Prescriptions can be obtained by mail order and from both network and non-network pharmacies.

Veterans Administration
The Veterans Administration (VA) provides free prescriptions for low-income veterans who have been honorably discharged from the military. Other veterans may obtain prescriptions for $7. Veterans must enroll with the VA, be seen by a VA doctor and receive the prescriptions from VA hospitals and pharmacies.

Cumberland Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Milepost 217.5
Located near the Virginia state line, Cumberland Knob was the site where construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway was started in 1935 as a part of President Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps. It was therefore the first recreation area to be opened to the public, and is still a favorite destination for both locals and visitors. The mixture of lush woodlands and open fields, housing a variety of birds and other wildlife, is ideal for leisurely walks or a more demanding hike to nearby Gully Creek.

Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Mileposts 238.5-244.7

Doughton Park is on the best places along the motor road to view white-tailed deer, raccoons, red and grey foxes, and bobcats, as well as spectacular shows of flame azalea and rhododendron in the late spring.
