Workforce Development Board
The mission of the High Country Workforce Development
Board (WDB) is to facilitate the development of a skilled
workforce that responds to the needs of the area's employers
for quality and diversity in a globally competitive economy..
The High Country Workforce Development Board provides policy
guidance and independent oversight for workforce development
services for adults, dislocated workers, economically disadvantaged
youth, and other groups. The Workforce Development Board provides
a forum where private and public sector leaders jointly consider
the education, job training and employment needs of our communities.
The High Country Workforce Development Board has created a
Youth Council as an extension or arm of the Board. The Youth
Council is composed of a cross section of representatives
who have knowledge, experience, and expertise with the youth
population and youth services in our region. The Youth Council
believes strongly in program consolidation, streamlining,
and establishment of one-stop career centers.

What is the Youth Resource Directory?
The Directory, developed by the Youth Council, compiles youth
services available in the High Country's seven-county area
including Alleghany,
Ashe, Avery,
Mitchell, Watauga,
Wilkes, and Yancey
Counties. The purposes of this directory are to identify provider
agencies, existing youth services, and gaps in needed services.
The directory will serve as a planning tool in developing
youth activities and services under the Workforce Investment
Act. The Manual will also serve as a comprehensive and practical
guide for all individuals and organizations needing basic
information regarding youth services.
This information is provided to you as
a community resource.
The High Country Workforce Development Board Youth Council,
sponsor of this information service, makes no representations
or warranties regarding the quality or availability of products
or services provided by these agencies. This is not an exclusive
list of services for the areas listed. The Youth Council relied
on organizations in each county to provide local information.
